PRESENTED BELOW IS A SHORTENED EXPLANATION TO SHOW YOU A CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER OF SOME STAGES OF TREATMENT.

IF YOU WANT TO GET TO KNOW THE PONSETI METHOD, SEE THE COURSE OF TREATMENT HERE PRZEBIEG LECZENIA.

  • Birth

Whether or not the defect has been recognised with the ultrasound, it is only after birth that it can be confirmed.
  • The beginning of treatment

The treatment can start within first couple of weeks after birth. You don’t need to start the treatment immediately – give yourself some time to get to know the defect and the treatment itself, decide on the physician and place. Get acquainted with THE COURSE OF THE TREATMENT. Errors can be hard to correct, you can’t turn back the time. Don’t take too long to start the treatment though.
  • Plaster-cast treatment

This stage is about weekly manipulations with the use of plaster casts. The correction is gradual, slow and gentle. The procedure is repeated until the foot is aligned correctly – usually it takes 5-7 plaster casts.
  • Order!

After the last cast is removed (before tenotomy), a doctor should measure child’s feet and advise on the size of the shoes and brace. Solutions verified and RECCOMENDED by doctors and parents help make the decision. The child cannot be left without the necessary equipment, so make sure that all measurements are made now. It is time to order shoes and a bar!
  • Achillotenotomy

After the series of plaster casts, most of the children need to undertake a simple procedure of transdermal tenotomy of the Achilles tendon. It is thanks to this procedure the foot obtains normal condition and full functionality. After the procedure the child is to wear a plaster cast for 3-4 weeks.
  • The bar and the time

ON THE SAME DAY that the last cast is removed, physician puts the shoes on child’s legs and attach them to an abduction rotation bar. This cannot be made later as the child CANNOT be left without shoes and bar after the last cast has been removed. Setting the ABDUCTION ROTATION BAR is very important. For the FIRST 3 MONTHS the child needs to wear the brace for 23/24 hours a day. After this stage the bracing time is slowly reduced in accordance with pre-defined schedule which can be found on this website.
  • No less than 10 hours…

After the slow reduction, the child wears brace only during the night and day-time naps (if any). However, the bracing should not be less than 10 hours a day!
  • End of treatment

The brace is being worn for the night (no less than 10 hours a day) until 4-5 years of age, in some cases longer.
  • What’s next?

Keeping an eye on your child’s feet is highly recommended. Regular check-ups at your orthopaedist are advisable as well.
